FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Is this one pageant that awards three separate titles?

Yes, this is a one-day pageant with two divisions, Miss and Teen.  The Miss contestants will compete in Interview, Swimsuit, and Evening Gown and the Teen contestants will compete in Interview, Active Wear, and Evening Gown.  This will all take place on one day.  The winners of the pageant will be crowned Miss South Central OH and Miss South Central OH Teen. The additional titles of Miss North Central and Miss Capital City (Miss and Teen) will be awarded after the pageant is over.

Are Miss South Central, Miss North Central, and Miss Capital City all crowned during the final show of the pageant?

No, we only crown Miss South Central Ohio and Miss South Central Ohio Teen during the final show.   After the show, Miss North Central and Capital City titleholders will receive sashes and crowns.

When and where is the pageant?

The pageant will be on the last Saturday in June in Ashville, Ohio at Teays Valley High School.

How many girls typically compete in this preliminary?
The number of contestants varies from year to year. Typically, we have on average 15 contestants competing in each division each summer.  If we have less than 10 contestants in each division (Miss or Teen) we will narrow the list to a Top 3 rather than a Top 5 for on-stage question.  If there are over 10 contestants in each division, we will narrow it down to a Top 5.

What time does the pageant start and end?
This varies from year to year and depends on the number of contestants.  Typically, the pageant begins at 11:30 a.m. and ends by 8:30 p.m. with a break for dinner from 4:30-6:00 p.m.  Registered contestants will receive an official itinerary a week before the pageant.

Do I have to live in a specific area of Ohio to compete in this pageant?

No, we accept girls from the entire state to compete in our pageant.  Geography does not matter in any way.

Do I have to win a preliminary pageant to go on to the state pageant (Miss OH USA/Miss OH Teen USA)?

No, contestants do NOT have to win a preliminary pageant to compete at the state level.  Preliminary pageants offer monetary support as well as other support in preparing for the state pageant.  See the Benefits & Prizes tab for more details on the support our preliminary offers its winners.

Do I have to perform a talent for your pageant?

No.  This preliminary pageant (as well as Miss OH USA/Miss OH Teen USA) is comprised of 3 phases of preliminary competition: Interview, Swimsuit/Fitness Wear, and Evening Gown.  Once it is narrowed down to a Top 5 (or Top 3; dependent on the number of contestants), the Top 5 will answer an On-stage question.

What do I wear for opening number/introduction?
Contestants will receive the official pageant t-shirt and will pair it with either white bottoms (Teens only) or black bottoms (Miss only).  The bottoms can be shorts, a skirt, capris, or pants. You may wear any style of shoes you would like.  If you want to wear something more suited to your personality (like cowboy boots or flats) you may do that!

Do I have to wear a certain color or style of swimsuit/active wear/evening gown?
No.  You may wear any color or style of swimsuit (thong bottoms are not permitted).  This includes prints, however, solids typically present better on a stage and are recommended.  You may wear a one-piece, two-piece, or tankini (again, no thong bottoms).  Teens are competing in active wear, rather than swimsuits.  The active wear requirements are: BLACK athletic shorts, capris, OR pants paired with  ANY COLOR sports bra OR tank top.  Tennis shoes may be any color.  Contestants may wear any color or length of evening gown, which includes short, mid-length or long gowns.  Most girls, however, will choose to wear the long style of evening gown.

What kind of shoes should I wear on-stage for opening number, swimsuit/activewear, and evening gown competitions?
You may wear any type of shoe/heel you would like.  They can be nude, silver, black, or any other color or heel height you would like.  For opening number, if you want to wear something more suited to your personality (like cowboy boots or flats) you may do that!  Show the judges your personality!  For the active wear portion (Teens only), you may wear any color tennis shoe.

Can my parent/friend/stylist stay with me during the competition and help me get ready?

We do not allow anyone at the pageant after orientation other than the contestants, directors, volunteers, and judges.  There will be a 2-3 hour window of time after interviews/stage rehearsal for the contestants to leave the facility to get dinner, etc.  In this time frame, contestants can have all the necessary help in the dressing room with hair/makeup, etc.  When the time comes for contestants to stay backstage in preparation for the show to begin, parents/friends/stylists must go to the auditorium and take their seats.  We do this to maintain as much fairness as possible.

What if I have a tattoo or body piercing?

We feel that tattoos and piercings are a statement of your individuality.  We have not prohibited anyone from entering the pageant because of them.  Should you feel that your tattoo might be offensive, you may want to make sure it is covered by your swimwear, gown or even body makeup.  If you are uncomfortable with your naval piercing, you may want to make sure your wardrobe covers it, remove it totally or replace it with something smaller for the competition.
